Figures published this week that point to a hugely wasteful NHS, ignore the emerging pattern of NHS trusts
saving millions through smarter procurement processes.
One of the leading providers of procurement services to the UK‟s Public Sector, MultiQuote, shows that the
naturally competitive environment provided by its service has led to average savings of 10-15% being
achieved along with increased price transparency.
This week's article in the Timesi is just one of many suggesting
that NHS procurement is wasteful and inefficient. It seems that everybody is lining up to attack NHS buyers
without necessarily understanding the uniquely complex nature of healthcare procurement.
Managing Director of MultiQuote, David Marley, said :
“Over £300 million of opportunities for UK companies to do business with the NHS have been put through
MultiQuote in the last 12 months. Many of these companies are SMEs that would not have had access to
this market otherwise, and it leads to fierce competition and the very best prices for NHS trusts.”
MultiQuote operates on the simple principle of connecting buyers' requirements with sellers' most competitive
prices in real time, through a powerful online matching mechanism. The vast majority of transactions on the
system are low value, avoiding the need for contracts between buyer and seller, an area of procurement that
has not traditionally been addressed in the NHS. MultiQuote allows this to be done efficiently and effectively
saving the NHS £millions through sheer volume of transactions at the best available prices.
A growing number of NHS supplies departments currently use MultiQuote to address this issue in- house and ensure
suppliers are constantly in competition. The current savings figures being achieved translate to potential savings
of around £150 million across the entire NHS.
A Head of Procurement for an NHS trust based in London said:
“We saved £10,000 last week on one server alone using the MultiQuote system. The MultiQuote service has given
us the opportunity to challenge the market and ensure that we can purchase goods and services at the best price.
It's been used on everything from televisions to drug refrigerators to servers to paper.”
